NCERT is introducing revised textbooks for Class 9 as part of the broader curriculum changes linked to the National Curriculum Framework for School Education. The new Social Science textbook, Understanding Society: India & Beyond, Part 2, is being made available for the 2026-27 academic session. Current reports place its release alongside the continuing rollout of revised Class 9 textbooks.
The revised Social Science curriculum places greater emphasis on understanding society through historical, geographical, political, economic and cultural perspectives.
NCERT’s Grade 9 curriculum document says students are expected to learn how to source and validate information, interpret data and evidence, construct logical explanations and develop critical and reflective thinking.
The revised approach therefore goes beyond simply remembering facts. The curriculum aims to help students understand how societies change and how different historical, geographical and social factors interact.
The new history content has also attracted attention because of its treatment of medieval Indian history. Recent reporting on the textbook says the period from around 1000 to 1700 is presented through themes including resistance and resurgence, with discussion of regional powers and historical developments across the subcontinent.
The textbook is part of a larger curriculum transition. NCERT has already been rolling out revised books for Class 9, with the new mathematics textbook, Ganita Manjari: Part 2, becoming available earlier in September. The Social Science textbook follows as another part of the new curriculum rollout.
For students, a new textbook means that preparation should be based on the prescribed book for their academic session rather than older editions or coaching notes alone.
Teachers will also need to adapt classroom plans to the revised structure. NCERT’s curriculum framework places importance on inquiry, analysis and evidence-based reasoning, meaning classroom activities may increasingly involve interpretation and discussion rather than only textbook recall.
The curriculum also connects Social Science education with responsible citizenship. NCERT says the subject is intended to help students understand democratic values, constitutional principles, social diversity, inequality, conflict, environmental issues and economic challenges.
Students should therefore pay attention not only to dates and names but also to explanations, maps, evidence, historical context and connections between different topics.
Parents should also make sure that children are using authorised textbooks. NCERT has issued notices concerning fake or unauthorised textbook material, making it important to verify editions through official channels.
The Class 9 textbook changes are part of a larger shift in school education towards competency-based learning. For students, the most useful response is to become familiar with the new textbook early and understand how questions may require reasoning and interpretation.
