Candidates preparing for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, or GATE 2027, have received additional time to complete their applications. IIT Madras has extended the registration deadline to October 5, 2026, for candidates applying without a late fee.
Candidates who miss the regular deadline can submit their applications with an additional late fee until October 12, 2026, according to the latest revised schedule.
GATE 2027 will be conducted by IIT Madras and is scheduled to take place on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027. The exam will be conducted across 30 test papers.
One of the notable changes this year is the introduction of a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper. IIT Madras has also revised certain paper structures and syllabi, including changes affecting the XE, XH and XL sectional papers. Candidates should therefore check the latest syllabus instead of relying on an older GATE preparation plan.
The registration process also includes a digital identity requirement. Current information says registration for Indian nationals involves a verified DigiLocker account. Candidates should make sure their documents and details are ready before completing the application.
GATE is used for admission to postgraduate programmes and, depending on the organisation and recruitment rules, can also be used by public-sector employers as part of recruitment.
Candidates can appear for one or two papers, but the second paper must be selected from the combinations permitted by GATE 2027. The official paper combinations should be checked before submitting the application.
The extended deadline gives applicants additional time, but candidates should not wait until the final day. Application forms require personal details, academic information, paper selection and document uploads. Errors in these areas can create problems later.
The application correction window is scheduled to open on October 14 and close on October 21. City allotment information is expected on January 4, 2027, while admit cards are scheduled for January.
Candidates should also remember that GATE preparation is not limited to completing the application. With the examination scheduled for February, students have several months to revise the syllabus, solve previous-year questions and take mock tests.
Those interested in the new Robotics and Automation paper should pay particular attention to the official syllabus before deciding whether it matches their academic background.
The immediate priority for applicants who have not completed registration is simple: check eligibility, choose the correct paper combination, prepare the required documents and submit the form before the applicable deadline.
