The University Grants Commission has asked universities to expedite the adoption of the Academic Bank of Credits system, noting that the reform’s promise of flexibility remains largely unrealised on the ground. Institutions have been told to integrate their digital systems more effectively and ensure that students are able to seamlessly store and transfer academic credits.
The push comes amid a broader review of reforms introduced under the National Education Policy 2020, where the Academic Bank of Credits was positioned as a cornerstone of multidisciplinary and flexible learning pathways. However, officials indicate that uptake has been inconsistent, with several universities yet to fully operationalise the platform.
At the heart of the concern is the gap between policy design and institutional readiness. While the framework allows students to move across institutions and disciplines, the lack of standardised digital infrastructure has limited its effectiveness. In many cases, credits are being recorded but not actively utilised for mobility or course flexibility.
The Commission has also flagged the need for greater awareness among students and faculty. Without clarity on how the system functions, the intended shift towards a more fluid higher education structure risks remaining underused.
Universities have now been asked to prioritise integration, streamline credit validation processes, and align academic structures with the system’s requirements. The coming academic cycle is expected to serve as a critical test of whether the reform can move beyond intent and begin delivering tangible outcomes.
