Jadavpur University has decided to discontinue its Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension as part of a restructuring exercise aimed at streamlining academic programmes and research activities.
According to a university circular, the department will cease to function from April 1, 2026. Its academic activities will be reorganised into two new entities. These are the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the School of Engineering Management and Continuing Education.
University officials said the decision follows a resolution adopted earlier by the executive council, which approved the creation of the two schools. Courses related to journalism and mass communication will now be administered by the newly created School of Journalism and Mass Communication, while programmes linked to professional and continuing education will move under the School of Engineering Management and Continuing Education.
Faculty members indicated that the restructuring is intended to bring clarity to the academic structure and ensure that degree programmes are aligned with the departments that offer them. The move is also expected to strengthen research and update curricula to reflect changes in the media and professional education landscape.
The development marks a significant administrative shift within the university as it seeks to reorganise its academic units to better reflect emerging disciplines and evolving demands in higher education.
