The Central Board of Secondary Education will introduce a third language option for students in Class 6 from the 2026–27 academic session, aligning its curriculum framework with the National Education Policy 2020 and its emphasis on multilingual learning at the foundational and preparatory stages of schooling.
The move is part of a broader effort to operationalise the language vision outlined in the policy, which encourages students to learn three languages during their school years, with at least two being native to India. By introducing the third language at the middle school level, the Board aims to provide structured exposure to linguistic diversity at an early age.
Officials indicated that the decision is intended to strengthen cognitive development among students while deepening their cultural understanding. Research cited in policy discussions has consistently linked multilingual education with improved problem solving skills, better memory retention and enhanced academic performance across disciplines.
The rollout will apply to CBSE-affiliated schools across the country. Schools are expected to receive detailed guidelines on implementation, including subject combinations and academic scheduling, ahead of the new session.
Educationists view the step as a significant shift in curriculum planning at the middle school stage. They note that effective execution will require adequate teacher availability, resource materials and coordination with state language offerings to ensure students are provided meaningful choices.
With this change, CBSE joins a growing list of education boards aligning their academic structures with the language and learning reforms envisaged under the National Education Policy 2020.
