Chandigarh’s District Education Office has issued new directives to private recognised schools in the Union Territory aimed at improving transparency and protecting parental choice in the procurement of textbooks and uniforms.
Under the updated guidelines, schools are required to publish class-wise textbook lists and uniform specifications prominently on their websites and school notice boards well ahead of the academic session. The move is intended to ensure that parents are fully informed about required materials and are not compelled to purchase items from specific vendors tied to schools.
Officials stressed that the changes will help eliminate confusion over book editions, publishers and prices while protecting families from unnecessary or inflated expenses. Schools have also been instructed to provide details of approved suppliers and allow parents to source textbooks and uniforms from the open market if they choose.
The directive prohibits schools from bundling textbook and uniform purchases through mandatory vendor contracts. Any school found violating the rules may face administrative action, including penalties under the terms of its recognition.
Parents and education stakeholders have welcomed the move, viewing it as a positive step towards greater accountability in school administration and a safeguard for family finances.
The UT administration said similar measures may be reviewed for wider implementation if the current guidelines prove effective in promoting transparency and choice in the education sector.
