Chennai: Physical Education should be formally introduced as a compulsory subject for students from Classes I to V to address growing concerns over children’s physical health, attention span, and overall development, education experts and child health specialists have recommended.
The proposal, discussed during recent academic consultations, stresses that early exposure to structured physical activity is as critical as literacy and numeracy. Experts pointed out that the absence of a defined Physical Education framework at the primary level has resulted in reduced outdoor activity, increased screen time, and rising cases of childhood obesity and posture-related issues.
They underlined that Physical Education at the foundational stage should focus on age-appropriate activities such as basic motor skills, flexibility exercises, coordination games, and team-based play, rather than competitive sports. The aim, they said, is to build healthy habits early and support cognitive growth, emotional balance, and social skills.
Educationists also highlighted that integrating Physical Education into the curriculum would reduce academic pressure by offering children structured breaks from classroom learning. Research shared during the discussions indicated that regular physical activity improves concentration, classroom behaviour, and learning outcomes in young students.
The experts recommended that trained Physical Education instructors be appointed at the primary level and that schools be supported with basic infrastructure such as open play areas and simple equipment. They also suggested that assessment should remain non-evaluative, focusing on participation rather than performance.
Officials acknowledged the recommendations and indicated that the proposal aligns with broader goals of holistic education. The matter is expected to be examined further as part of ongoing curriculum review discussions.
