Higher education institutions in coastal Karnataka are appointing Professors of Practice, or PoPs, as part of a wider push to strengthen links between classrooms and industry floors. The move follows the University Grants Commission framework that allows experienced professionals from industry, public policy, government, and social sectors to teach and mentor students without following the conventional academic career route.
Universities and autonomous colleges in Mangaluru and nearby districts have begun onboarding senior executives, technologists, legal experts, healthcare professionals, and entrepreneurs as PoPs. These appointments are aimed at making learning more application driven, with a focus on real world problem solving, case based teaching, and exposure to current industry practices.
Institution heads say PoPs are expected to play a role beyond teaching. They will guide curriculum updates, mentor student projects, support internships, and help institutions build partnerships with companies and professional bodies. Many will also advise on skill gaps and emerging areas that require academic attention.
Under the UGC framework, PoPs can be appointed for a fixed term, with remuneration decided by the institution. They are not required to hold a PhD or meet traditional eligibility norms, provided they bring substantial professional experience and domain knowledge.
Faculty members see the initiative as a way to complement academic teaching rather than replace it. Students, especially those in engineering, management, law, and health sciences, are expected to gain from industry insights, workplace exposure, and career guidance at an early stage.
Educationists note that the success of the model will depend on how effectively institutions integrate PoPs into academic planning and student engagement. If implemented with clarity and consistency, the approach could narrow the gap between education and employment, a concern often flagged by employers and policymakers.
