New Delhi: District Institutes of Education and Training have begun rolling out the four year integrated Bachelor of Education programme, marking a shift in teacher training in line with the National Education Policy’s emphasis on longer, multidisciplinary preparation for school educators.
The integrated programme combines undergraduate study with professional teacher training, replacing the earlier two year BEd route for students entering the profession after Class 12. The course is aligned with the Integrated Teacher Education Programme framework approved by national regulators.
Officials said admissions to the four year BEd programme will be conducted through a national level entrance test, and the curriculum will include subject knowledge, pedagogy, classroom practice, and school internships spread across the duration of the course.
The programme is expected to be offered in multiple subject combinations, preparing graduates to teach at the foundational, primary, and secondary school levels. Authorities said the extended duration would allow for deeper academic grounding and more sustained classroom exposure.
Education officials described the launch as part of a broader restructuring of teacher education aimed at improving teaching quality and professional standards. Existing two year BEd programmes will continue for graduates, but the integrated course is expected to become the primary pathway for future teachers.
Institutions have been asked to ensure infrastructure readiness and faculty capacity before scaling up admissions in subsequent academic cycles.
